Children's Ward

The Children's Ward is a 24-bed inpatient unit that caters for children newborn to 18 years old. We attend to children with asthma, other respiratory (breathing) illnesses such as bronchiolitis and gastroenteritis.
 
 Age admission on the ward:
  • From 8 days - 11 years
Patient intake
  • Daily: - 4 patients
  • Weekly: - 28 patients
  • Monthly:  - 112 patients                         
  • Annually: -1,344 patients
 Average duration stayed in the hospital: 
  • Always 2 days – 5 days unless otherwise. Determined
 Common conditions:
  • Severe malaria.
  • Severe anemia.
  • Pneumonia.
  • Measles.
  • Burns
  • Acute G/E with dehydration.
  • Acute glomerunephritis.
  • Tetanus.
  • Malnutrition etc.
 
 Staffing:
 Staffing is good with 10 members of staff:
1 Medical Dr.
1 Registered nurse
5 Enrolled nurses
2 Nursing Assistants
1 Cleaner
 
N.B: One clinical officer helps out for weekend calls only
 
There is team work on the Pediatric ward.
 
Time management:
 
Pediatric ward staff have good time management and in case one has to report late, communication is always made to others.
 
DUTIES CARRIED OUT IN PEDIATRIC WARD
  • Dump dusting.
  • Admitting / discharging patients.
  • Nursing care.
  • Temperature taking.
  • Routine ward round.
  • At times wound dressing.
  • Ordering and administering drugs.
  • Replacing the canulars (canulation).
  • Health education to care takers.
  • Receiving patients after %:00 pm.
  • Ward meetings.
